In the 6th century, the Byzantine (Eastern Roman) Emperor Justinian I was frustrated by the silk trade – the Persians controlled the middle route, and Rome was paying enormous amounts of gold for silk.

Around 552 CE, Justinian dispatched two Nestorian monks to China. Under the guise of missionary work, they hid silkworm eggs inside hollow walking sticks and smuggled them out of China.

East and South: Spread to Korea, Japan, and India

While the technology spread westward, it also moved east and south.

Korea was one of the earliest recipients of sericulture from China, with records suggesting introduction around 1000 BCE. From Korea, the technology passed to Japan around the 3rd century CE. The Japanese imperial court treasured silk and developed its own industry.

India's sericulture history is more complex, with influences from Central Asia, Persia, and southern maritime routes. The northeastern state of Assam had its own tradition of wild silk (Muga), while domesticated mulberry silkworms were later introduced through multiple channels.

Westward Relay: Arabs, Europeans, and the Americas

After reaching Byzantium, silk technology continued its journey west.

In the 7th–8th centuries, the Arabs conquered Persia and Central Asia, and they too learned sericulture. They established early silk-weaving centres in Spain.

In the 12th–13th centuries, Italian cities like Lucca, Venice, and Florence emerged as major silk producers. By the 15th century, Lyon, France, had become Europe's silk capital. The "Chinese secret" had become a "European industry".

In the 17th century, sericulture was introduced to the Americas. British colonists attempted to rear silkworms in Virginia and South Carolina, and although the climate was not ideal, silk textile industries gradually developed in parts of North America.

What Does Technology Transfer Require?

Silk technology did not spread by a single document or manual. It required:

  • Movement of people – sericulturists, reeling workers, and weavers carried their skills wherever they went.
