What Are Warp and Weft?

Fabric is woven from yarns. The yarns running lengthwise along the fabric are the warp. Those running crosswise are the weft. Warp yarns are under higher tension during weaving, so they're usually stronger. Weft yarns fill the surface and determine the final texture.

The number of warp yarns per unit length is the warp density, and the same for weft is the weft density. Together they define the fabric's construction.

Higher density means more yarns packed into every square centimetre – a tighter, heavier, more durable fabric. Lower density yields a looser, lighter, more sheer fabric.

How Density Affects Fabric Quality

Luster: When warp and weft are evenly and densely packed, the fabric surface is smooth and reflects light uniformly. Uneven or sparse density scatters light, making the luster look "mottled" or dull.

Hand-feel: High-density fabric feels crisp and substantial – "bodied" without being stiff. Low-density fabric feels softer but lacks support and can feel insubstantial. The right density depends on the garment – a shirt needs different density than a gown.

Durability: Dense fabrics resist abrasion and tearing better. The yarns are tightly packed and don't shift easily. Low-density fabrics stretch, pill, and deform more quickly with wear and washing.

Drape: Medium density gives the best drape – the fabric flows naturally, following the body's lines. Overly dense fabric becomes stiff and loses fluidity; overly sparse fabric collapses limply.

Different weaves have different density ranges. High density isn't always "better" – it must match the design intent. A chiffon scarf needs low density; a structured blazer lining needs higher density.

How to Judge Density When Sourcing

1. Hold it up to light. A low-density fabric lets through more light, and you can see distinct gaps between yarns. A high-density fabric blocks more light and appears more uniform.

2. Pinch and twist. Pinch the fabric between thumb and forefinger and twist gently. High-density fabric feels tight – there's little yarn movement. Low-density fabric feels loose and shifts easily.

3. Look at the selvedge. The selvedge is the most stable part of the weave. If the selvedge is loose or uneven, the entire roll likely has density issues.

4. Ask for the numbers. A reputable supplier should be able to provide warp and weft densities in threads per centimetre (or per inch). If they only say "high density" without specific numbers, request the weaving process parameter sheet for verification.

5. Compare rolls. Consistency matters. Check multiple rolls from the same order – if density varies noticeably between rolls, the mill's quality control is inconsistent.

Why Some Factories "Skimp" on Density

Reducing density is the most subtle way to cut costs. The fabric looks similar, but the yarn savings are significant. A 5% reduction in both warp and weft density can cut yarn consumption by roughly 10% – a direct material cost saving.

What to Put in Your Contract

Beyond specifying momme weight and fabric type, include the minimum acceptable warp and weft density. For example:

"Warp density shall be no less than 52 threads/cm, and weft density no less than 38 threads/cm, measured at three points along the roll."

This gives you a clear basis for acceptance or rejection – and encourages the supplier to maintain consistent weaving standards.
