Brands talk about sustainability all the time. Organic cotton. Recycled polyester. Closed-loop production. But silk? Silk is often left out of the conversation—as if it doesn't belong in the sustainable narrative.

That's a mistake. Silk is one of the most naturally sustainable fibres on the planet. The problem isn't the fibre. The problem is the supply chain.

Let's start with the fibre itself.

Silk is a protein fibre. It's renewable, biodegradable, and requires far less water and land than cotton. Life cycle assessment (LCA) data consistently shows that silk production generally has a lower environmental footprint than cotton, viscose, and polyester in several key categories—including water consumption, energy use, and greenhouse gas emissions.

Cotton is thirsty and pesticide-heavy. Polyester is plastic and non-biodegradable. Viscose production involves chemicals and deforestation.

A silkworm eats mulberry leaves and produces a filament that can be reeled into thread. No chemical solvents. No microplastics. No fossil fuels.

As a protein fibre produced without chemical solvents or fossil fuel inputs, silk stands out among natural fibres for its inherently low processing footprint.

But the processing side is where it gets complicated.

Sustainability isn't automatic. It depends on every stage of production, processing, and transport.

  • Some mulberry farms use heavy chemical fertilisers. In some conventional farming, nitrogen-based fertilisers are applied at rates that can lead to soil acidification and local waterway eutrophication.
  • Some degumming facilities discharge untreated wastewater into rivers. Traditional degumming processes often use harsh alkaline soaps and generate wastewater with high biological oxygen demand (BOD).
  • Some factories rely on coal-fired boilers for heat.

These are fibre-external issues. They are supply chain issues. And they are solvable.

What sustainable silk looks like in practice:

Organic mulberry farming. No synthetic fertilisers or pesticides. Soil and groundwater stay intact. The silkworms eat cleaner leaves, which leads to more consistent fibre quality.

Clean degumming. The sericin layer on raw silk must be removed. Some mills use milder enzyme-based processes that drastically reduce chemical use. Others still use traditional methods. The technology is available—it's a matter of choice.

Energy-efficient weaving. Modern looms consume less electricity. Some mills are switching to solar or biomass energy. It's not yet the norm, but more mills are adopting it.

Wastewater treatment. Dyeing and finishing are water-intensive. But current treatment systems can recycle water to reusable standards. Several mills in Nanchong already have these systems installed—they're not prototypes, they're operating today.

Labour and animal welfare. Sustainability isn't just environmental. It also covers working conditions, hours, wages, and for some brands, peace silk (where silkworms are allowed to emerge as moths).

The problem is not the fibre—it's traceability.

Most brands can't tell you exactly which farm their silk came from. They know the mill name. They know the country. But they don't know the mulberry field, the degumming process, or where the wastewater went.

That's not sustainability. That's a label.

What meaningful sustainable sourcing actually requires:

First, traceability. You need to account for origin, process, and records for every batch. No guesswork.

Second, verifiability. Certificates are a starting point, not an endpoint. OEKO-TEX, GOTS, GRS, BSCI—all provide checkable numbers. Verification isn't complicated, but it requires supplier cooperation.

Third, on-the-ground visibility. You can't fly to Sichuan every week. But someone can do it for you—walk the floor, check records, shoot video, report back. Sustainability requires transparency.

This is what I do.

I'm based in Nanchong, a silk-producing region. For every batch, I look beyond the fabric at the entire chain:

  • Where the mulberry leaves come from.
  • What degumming process was used.
  • Whether wastewater is treated.
  • Actual working conditions.
  • Whether certificates are valid and current.

For example, in a recent order, we traced the cocoons back to three specific villages and verified the mill's effluent treatment system was operating within local regulatory limits. We photograph the process and include the BSCI audit date in our report.
