Silk fibres are not perfectly smooth. They have a subtle, scaly surface structure—not as rough as wool, but not completely flat either. When you rub, crush, or compress the fabric, these fibres rub against each other, creating vibration and friction. That vibration produces the characteristic rustling sound.

Think of it this way: the finer, longer, and more elastic the fibres, the more consistent and clear the sound. It's a physical indicator of fibre condition.

Why Do Some Silks Scroop and Others Don't?

The answer lies in two factors: degumming and finishing.

Raw silk is coated with a natural protein called sericin. When it comes straight out of the cocoon, it feels stiff and dull, and the sound it makes when rubbed is muted. The degumming process removes part or all of this sericin—freeing the fibres and allowing the scroop to emerge.

But here's the thing: degumming is not a simple on/off switch.

  • Incomplete degumming leaves sericin on the fibre surface, which muffles the sound.
  • Excessive degumming damages the fibre structure, which also weakens the scroop.
  • Proper degumming removes just enough sericin to let the fibres move freely, producing a clean, consistent sound.

Finishing also plays a major role. Some mills apply heavy silicone-based softeners to make the fabric feel "silky smooth." This reduces surface friction—and with it, the scroop disappears.

The Silicone Trap

When a glossy silk fabric is completely silent, it often means it has been heavily treated with silicone softeners. The fabric may feel smooth, but the friction that makes silk "silk" has been engineered away. In many cases, this is done to mask lower-quality fibre.

So a silent glossy silk is not necessarily a sign of luxury—it's often a sign of heavy finishing.

Can Scroop Be Used to Judge Quality?

Yes—but with caution.

A fabric with a clear, consistent scroop usually indicates:

  • Proper degumming
  • No excessive softener treatment
  • Fibre structure that hasn't been chemically compromised

However, the absence of scroop does not automatically mean poor quality. Some premium finishes—like sand-washed silk or matte crepe—are deliberately processed to remove the scroop. These are high-quality fabrics, but they are designed for a different aesthetic.

So a more accurate rule is this: a fabric with scroop is likely well-processed, but a fabric without scroop is not necessarily bad—you just need to ask why.

How to Use Scroop When Sourcing

Take a small piece of fabric, grip it firmly, and rub it several times. Listen carefully.

  • Clear, even, lasting rustle → fibres are in good condition, degumming was well-controlled.
  • Dull, short, or inconsistent sound → degumming may be incomplete or the fibre structure may be compromised.
  • Complete silence → ask about the finishing process. If it's a glossy fabric, heavy softener treatment is likely.

Scroop is not the only indicator of quality. But combined with luster and hand feel, it's a very effective quick filter—it can help you screen out seven or eight out of ten low-quality fabrics before you even get to the lab tests.

A clear scroop tells you the fibre is alive. A silent glossy silk tells you something has been done to it.
